The Southwest part of British Columbia contains little patches of Mediterranean climate-cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Our island has different micro-climates on different sides of a hill. The northeast has mossy, coniferous forest like southern Alaska and southwest slopes have dry Garry oak parkland with Douglas fir, like parts of California. We, in N. America, have always has wasteful logging practices. Modern industrial logging is most atricious, but our pioneer forefathers also cut trees and did not bother to make use of them. I have a number of footpaths which take me through various habitats and ecosystems around our home. One of my favorites is the Garry oak open woodland. It has lovely, intimate vistas of meadows and flowers, rock outcrop and groves of trees. Here and there along my route I encounter the old fallen Douglas fir logs which were cut and left. My imagination takes flight on the reason for the cutting and leaving of that particular tree over half a century ago. Due to the lack of predators, the population of coastal black-tailed deer ( a subspecies of mule deer) is very high. Although deer sightings are commonplace, they always give our hearts a little lilt of joy. This is particularly true when they are bathed in beautiful " back light" , my favorite kind of lighting." Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once. Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander.
