Wolfpack in Moonlight
Robert Bateman
"The wolves move as silently as ghosts along the frozen moonlit river. They seem
to appear and disappear. At times they seem almost transparent. The longer
you watch, the more you discover. Rivers are the highways of the northern
wilderness, especially in winter. Game animals prefer the edge condition along
the river. Wolf packs use river routes for hunting and for simply moving
about their wide-ranging territory.
I wanted the composition of this picture to have a strong, unstoppable, driving force,
but I also wanted to give a feeling of the wolves appearing everywhere. I used a lot
of colour in the wolves' fur and the same colour in the snow to make them more
transparent, and to make them more ghostly I gave them virtually no shadow."
